All Together For Boston Red Sox

February 15th, 2012

As spring training ended in April, it appeared that outfielder Darnell McDonald was facing another season of minor league life.

Cut by the Boston Red Sox, who were loaded with outfielders owning guaranteed contracts, McDonald, 31, was on his way to Pawtucket, R.I. for another six months of pre-dawn wakeup calls, insufficient meal money and subsistence-level compensation. He had brief shots in the majors with the Orioles, Twins, and Reds and had failed to impress. At the end of the day it appeared that Darnell McDonald was another player in his early 30s who could do very well in the high minors but did not do enough to stick as a major leaguer.

He was not quite fast enough to cover centerfield on a regular basis, he did not have quite enough power to demand regular playing time in left or right field, he cannot play the infield, and he did not reach base quite often enough to be seen as a credible pinch hitter. In short, it appeared that he was one of the best baseball players in the country, just not one of the 700 best with the talent, drive and luck to stick in the major leagues.

That began to change on April 20. On that date the Red Sox put outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron on the disabled list and called up McDonald. That very night against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park, McDonald hit a game tying two-run pinch homer in the eighth inning and then drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the ninth as Boston won 7-6.

“Well, I got on the plane and was sitting around [waiting],” McDonald remembered in a conversation with Ian Browne of MLB.com. “I came to the field, pretty much put my uniform on and got ready for the game. I couldn’t write a script any better than this. A lot happened real quick tonight. It was a dream come true. That’s the reason I signed over here, to play in this type of atmosphere, to play for an organization like this.”

The Red Sox liked what they saw from McDonald in spring training and felt that, at some point, he might help them against left-handed pitching.

“Darnell McDonald is a great kid,” Manager Terry Francona said. “Again, early in spring training, he was hurt and he wasn’t able to play, so he had to go back to the Minor League complex and do his rehab. You give him that speech: ‘Go to Triple-A, play well and we’ll call you up.’ That’s what he did. And he impacts the first game he plays with us and helps us win.”

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, McDonald is the first Red Sox player to end a game with an RBI hit in his debut with the team since RBIs were first kept as a stat in 1920. And by clocking a home run in his first plate appearance, McDonald became the first Boston hitter to do that since Orlando Cabrera on Aug. 1, 2004.

Darnell McDonald has remained a steady contributor since his magical first night. Through June 28 he has hit .271 with five homers and a .410 slugging percentage in 166 at bats, all respectable major league numbers. Yet, despite his contribution, his future with the Red Sox is anything but assured. He is out of minor league options, which means Boston would have to put him on waivers if they decide to cut him and another organization might grab him. Even worse, he could return to the minor leagues

The problem is that Darnell McDonald cannot play second base or shortstop. With a glut of corner infielders and designated hitters on the roster, the Red Sox need their fifth outfielder to be able to play the infield, too. Bill Hall, another Boston reserve, might not be the most elegant infielder – but he at least is an infielder. If either Dustin Pedroia or Marco Scutaro turns an ankle in a game, Hall is an adequate fill-in. Darnell McDonald is not. Unless the Red Sox free up roster space with another move, the Red Sox might have no choice but to let McDonald walk away.

“The way I approach each and every day, I’m thinking about today,” McDonald told the Providence Journal. “I really don’t think about the future. I’m thinking about right now.”

A decade in the minors will create a lot of short-term thinking. For Darnell McDonald, 2010 has been a dream from which he is not anxious to

Require Continuing Education

February 10th, 2012

If you are in the process of making a career choice or thinking about a career change, there are a lot of things to consider. You need to find an option that will provide you with enough income to pay your bills and support your family. Ideally, you will choose a career that is fulfilling and brings you some happiness, even if you experience occasional boredom or burn out. Finally, you must find something you are willing to commit to, especially if you opt for something that requires continuing education. Some people work in environments where you have the occasional meeting or consultant came in to give you tips on performing better. But there are other jobs that require a day or more each year of continuing education. These fields require greater commitment because you must continue to learn and grow as your profession changes. Scottsdale jobs in CNA, San Diego jobs in CNA and a variety of other medical careers which require continuing education, as do many other positions.

Teaching is another field in which you will need continuing education. Typically, states set up requirements and teachers must show proof of their classes or workshops to continue to teach in the classroom. Schools often schedule continuing education so the teachers in their building are able to get their continuing education credit all at once. If you are a parent and notice your child is off for an in-service day, this is probably your childa€?s teachers get continuing education.

Similar to teaching is the childcare field. While childcare providers may not need as much continuing education as teachers, they are still required to turn in a certain number of hours or credits each year. Again, the state regulations vary from one state to another but most require that childcare providers stay up to date with theories, lessons, safety issues and discipline techniques. Continuing education is also a great way to feel rejuvenated about your work and go back into the classroom or learning environment with a renewed attitude and spirit.

Sometimes, sales positions require continuing education. There are typically no government regulations, but your company may require you stay up to date with sales techniques and information about your product. Your employers will more than likely pay for this continued training because it will help you on the sales floor, ultimately making them more money.

Regardless of your profession and its requirements, continuing education is a good idea. Those who are self-employed should seek out opportunities to continue to grow so their business is more successful. Even those who do not work to earn a living and spend their time caring for their children can benefit from continuing education. If you are employed and you think continuing education may benefit you and your success, consider speaking to your employer about opportunities. Chances are; they will be happy to hear you are eager to grow and learn as an employee. Those who are not employees should look into the benefits of enrolling in continuing education on their own.

What to do With Bathtubs That Won’t Drain

February 9th, 2012

As one of the most used plumbing fixtures in the home, a bathtub that won’t drain can be a very frustrating experience. Common causes of a clogged bathtub drain are hair, soapy sediment, and cleaning products that accumulate in the drain. A clogged bathtub drain will affect everyone in the household. Fortunately, there are number of things a homeowner can do to clear a clogged bathtub drain.

The following is a list of tips to fixing a bathtub that won’t drain:

1. Most clogs begin in the strainer. The first thing you can do is check the strainer on the drain if you have one. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and clear out any accumulated hair and debris. Once complete, run the water to see if the problem is resolved.

2. You can use a plunger to unclog the bathtub. Fill the tub with water high enough so that the head of the plunger will be submerged in the water. Place the lip of the plunger head over the drain hole. Using forceful thrusts push on the plunger. Repeatedly plunge until you clear the clog and then run hot water through the drain to see if you cleared the clog and the water is continuously running through the pipes.

3. Pour a drain cleaner in the bathtub drain. There are chemical drain cleaners on the market, however, some cleaners are corrosive and can damage the pipes. There are natural drain cleaners on the market that will clear a clog without harming the septic system. You can also make a homemade drain cleaner that consists of pouring a half cup of white vinegar and a half cup of baking soda. If it is a tough clog, it may have to sit overnight. After sitting, run hot water through the plumbing system to clear out any loosened and broken up debris.

4. Using a manual snake is effective at clearing a stubborn bathtub drain clog. First, use a screwdriver to remove the screws that are securing the trip lever face plate. Pull the face plate forward (towards you) and take out the drain stop. Then, unscrew and take out the bathtub drain grate. Feed the snake with the auger head going in first. Feed the snake through the drain system until you reach the blockage. Manipulate the snake so that you are grasping and loosening the clog. Push the snake auger head through the clog. Then, retract the snake and pull the clog out. Once you have the clog removed, run the faucet with hot water to get rid of any remaining pieces of debris.

The method you choose to clear a bathtub drain depends on your personal preference and the nature of the clog. With a little ‘know how,’ clearing a clog bathtub drain can be quite easy, however, if you have tried all methods and your bathtub still won’t drain, you should call a professional plumber who will have the skills and knowledge to find the cause of the problem and make the repair.

What Is Included In A Normal Septic Tank Maintenance Package

February 9th, 2012

It is vital for every home to have a properly running septic system. A septic tank is a unit that collects the wastewater that is carried out of the home. The wastewater is treated and the clean water is returned to the ground water table. When a septic system breaks down, it can be a costly and frustrating experience. Fortunately, there are professional companies that offer septic tank maintenance packages.

Yearly inspections of your septic tank will help extend the life of the septic system. Although maintenance packages can vary among companies, the following outlines a general list of the services provided in a normal septic tank package:

1. Experts recommend that a septic tank should be pumped every 2 – 3 years, depending on how often the septic tank is used and the size of the tank. The pumping and cleaning of the tank will remove accumulated waste and sludge so that the tank will continue to work properly. As well, pumping the tank allows for a complete examination of the tank.

2. Some septic system professionals will run water through all of the faucets to check for low water pressure and if there are any leaks and odours coming from the drain pipes.

They may also put a dye in the septic system to help locate any leaks.

3. An evaluation of all of the components of the septic system will be performed. There will be an examination of the plumbing fixtures and appliances that are connected to the water system such as washers and dishwashers and their water pipes to make sure everything is connected properly. They will also check to make sure wastewater is being discharged properly into the septic tank.

4. The septic inspection can also involve checking the drain field. The inspector will do a visual inspection of the septic system and drain field to observe drainage so they can make sure there are no signs of a septic system back up. An inspection may also include using digital cameras to visually inspect pipes leading to the absorption field. Cameras allow inspectors to visually examine all important components of the septic system in order to identify and repair any problems.

5. A septic system inspection can also include checking all the devices associated with the water system such as water pump and hot water tank. The professional will do a thorough examination of the components and perform tests to make sure everything is working properly.

Depending on the complexity of the septic system, the time it takes for a thorough maintenance inspection can take from 2 to 3 hours. To keep your septic tank and entire septic system functioning properly, the best thing you can do is have a yearly maintenance inspection, employ septic system maintenance practices throughout the year, and have your septic tank pumped every 2 to 3 years. Not only will it keep the septic tank and system operating properly and extend the life of the septic system, but it will also save you costly repair bills.

Tips on Preserving Your Butterfly Collection

January 31st, 2012

Butterflies have always been associated with beauty, freedom, and life’s miracles in being able to change from something insignificant to something majestic. People’s fascination with butterflies can be traced back to ancient times, and now there are even homes, room, offices and public areas that are adorned with butterfly themed designs. There are many species of butterfly and they also come in different sizes. What is most notable about butterflies are the beautiful colors and designs on their wings. These colors and designs are very intricate works of nature and when you think about how humble their lives began, butterflies can truly amaze and inspire you.

If you have fancied having your own butterfly collection, here is how you can properly frame butterflies and keep them beautiful for hundreds of years to come.

You can use a butterfly you caught on your or you can use a more beautiful, exotic, or maybe even rare butterfly. There are online catalogues where you can purchase them. Upon drying, relax your butterflies for 12 to 24 hours to allow moisture to return so that the butterfly will not look dried up.

Gently pinch the thorax of the butterfly so you can slowly spread its wings. Remember to do it lightly so you don’t destroy the structure of the wings or its color. Then dry up the butterfly so that it will relax and settle. Use small pins and small pieces of paper to mount your butterfly.

When rested, move the butterfly into the box or frame. You can keep some of the pins but make sure you are securing it properly and correctly on the foam beneath the butterfly. Mount the butterfly only once. Do not move it around after you have mounted it as you might break parts of it. Completely cover the box or frame and top with shadow or glass cover.

Proper maintenance should be done in order to make your butterfly collection last. Butterfly collections can last hundreds of years when preserved well. Do not place them under direct sunlight as some butterflies may not be able to hold up and eventually some colors may fade. Keep them away from hot or steamy places such as the bathroom as some frames, particularly those that are not airtight may allow moisture to seep in and damage the butterfly. Some use acrylic when framing butterflies but purchasing acrylic ones would be more expensive as the time required in making them is almost six times longer. This option is best suited for more serious butterfly collectors.

Framed butterflies make for great wall or room decoration. Whether hanged or placed on shelves, one can only think of majesty when it comes having framed butterflies. You can make this as a hobby or eventually you can make this an income-generating business. There are a lot of people who are into collections and butterflies can be a great investment because they never run out of style, and they can last for a very long time.

The process of Christmas decorating itself is a wonderful time of anticipation. A fun way to mark the time and add to the excitement of counting down the days is with a beautiful Advent wreath. Not only will the lighting of each candle bring you closer to Christmas, but you’ll have a perfect Christmas centerpiece for your holiday gatherings.

You may wonder why the Advent wreath is a table top Christmas centerpiece and not a hanging decoration. Advent literally means “coming” and the Latin adventus is a translation of the Greek word for “second coming”. The four weeks before Christmas is spent in preparation for the celebration of the “coming”. The Advent wreath traditionally has four candles which are lit each week prior to Christmas and sometimes a fifth candle to be lit on Christmas. Because of the addition of candles to this style of Christmas wreath, an Advent wreath is usually laid flat on a table.

The option of hanging is still available if you are adventurous in your decorating. These wreaths were often hung level to the ground from the ceiling. As you can imagine, a large wreath in this style would make an impressive display hanging over a table.

Beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas, one candle is lit. Each Sunday after, the previous candle(s) are lit along with the new one. You can add ceremony by talking with your family about the symbolism of each week. The first candle represents Hope, the second Love, the third Joy, and the fourth Peace. If you add a fifth candle, it goes in the middle and symbolizes Christmas.

To create your own Christmas table decorations, you only need a few items and a little creativity. You can choose a pre-made wreath, a round foam base, an Advent frame (which will have the candle holders in it) or use wire and shape your own. Select a size and style that is suitable for your table and sits level. Attach cut or artificial greenery to fill in your frame.

Next, space four candle holders and candles evenly around your wreath. You can find florist candle holders with a spike to go into foam, wrap candles with wire or insert single candle sticks into your display. Traditionally, purple candles are used because they are the color of the vestments priests wear during Advent and are considered penitent. In the third week, however, rose colored vestments are worn to represent rejoicing and the third candle is pink. If you can not find these colors, you can use white or ivory candles.

Your decorations can be as simple as ribbon or as elaborate as Christmas wreaths for the front door. Depending on how big your piece is, add in pinecones, seedpods, ornaments, fruits or bells. Just remember, you will be lighting candles so keep your decorations low and soak your greenery if you are using cut plants.

Be inspired by the idea of gathering around your centerpiece for each candle’s lighting and imagine how your Advent wreath will bring the Hope, Love, Joy and Peace of the season to your Christmas table. How wonderful to have a centerpiece that means so much as a way adding beauty to the room and embodying the excitement of preparing for Christmas!
